Crusaders and Haters

Here are two pieces I did for the Crusaders and Haters show in Culver City last month. The theme was Superheroes and Villains in American Pop Culture. I had a lot of fun making these little guys, and am probably going to do a few more versions if I ever have the time. They're now available as prints in my Shop, and you can also check out some pictures of the show here!

Little Pilot Skullington

I love love LOVE hummingbirds. My Grandma and great Grandma always had them around their house, and I always loved watching them. If you read up on them, you will find they live quite a tough life, and are constantly trying to stay alive. As a bird, I think they look awesome, so this all started with me wanting to paint a hummingbird, and somewhere along the way, it took a turn for the worst.

Rocketbird and El Batman

Couple recent things. I've been inspired to do some new stuff, so I pooped these things out.

Rocketbird is an old design I had that got printed at Threadless. I wanted to update it...

El Batman is an idea I've had for a bit, but I never got past sketching it out... "The famous Mexican Wrestler, El Batman. Urban Legend is that he doubled as a vigilante, cleaning up the streets of his city at night, but no proof of that has ever been found. His current whereabouts are unknown".

There are so many extremely inspiring Obama portraits, I wanted to take a crack at it. I don't think it has the same iconic-ness that Shepard Fairey's does...but I'm still happy with how it came out.

This was for a group show called "Hollywood, DC" in Hollywood. The theme was mixing politics with Hollywood. Too many Hollywoods...OK I'm done......Hollywood...

Mickey Mouse

Oh Mickey Mouse, another character which I have deep affection and utter hate for. Steamboat Willy is about as cool as it gets, whereas today's Mickey Mouse just doesn't cut it.

Super Mario World

I wanted to do my own version of the SNES classic, Super Mario World. I've always hated the Yoshi design, but also think he's a great gameplay element. And Mario gets more family friendly by the year, so I felt it was time for some grittiness. Hope you guys dig it!

Dominance War - Henry

Here was my entry for Dominance War III. A bunch of guys and I from work competed, and hopefully we can place. Regardless I had a lot of fun.

Here is his story -

When Henrys parents were killed by the machines when he was 3, he was left to grow up orphaned, homeless and alone. Until one day when he found a ring made of bone. He was unsure of its purpose but figured it was nothing more than creepy decoration, and at least equal to the value of a couple good meals, so he kept it in the best place he could think of, his finger!

Shortly after, Henry started to feel extremely strong, his empty stomach felt full, his energy was endless. This increased as the days went on, until he became extremely powerful, with the agility and strength to defeat giants with ease. Henry knew it was the ring, and became extremely cautious due to its fragility, His greed took over and he quickly and crudely build a glove around his hand and arm to protect it. The weight didn’t matter as he had no problem lifting it. He didn’t even make it removable, as he wanted to make sure his ring was always safe

Soon after, Henry discovered the true source of his power, the Skullies! Curious, child like creatures that he had unknowingly summoned by wearing the ring. It spooked him at first, but eventually he got used to it, and they began to form a bond.

It wasn’t all good though, Henry began to change, he noticed half of his body starting to decay. He knew, the Skullies knew, it was the ring. He had to choose a path. Having a sense of friendship and family for the first time, Henry decided to keep the ring, regardless of its effects on his body. He knew he could remain powerful if he protected the Skullies, and the Skullies followed him wherever he went.

Henry realized that his power had to be put to use, so he joined the war to fight the machines, and avenge his parents.

So to make a frustrating story short: Gamepro paid me to do a cover illustration for them. Which led to extreme excitement, since I had a subscription to it when I was a kid. What I gave them was similar to this, but more saturated, and no cigarette. What ended up on the cover was an edited image with brown skin and bright blue glowing vampire eyes. They also put it on a white background with Mario, and a bunch of other games coming out next year.

If you're super curious, here's a scan of the actual cover [ here ] Makes me upset every time I see it, but nothing I can do now except complain.

Santa Fe Reporter

This was a cover for the Santa Fe Reporter. It was for a story about a Furry radio station in Santa Fe, and how furries cope with everyday life. If you know anything about furries, you probably know too much. It was a fun piece to do, and I like how it came out!

Middle Class Batman!

So I havent done any art for myself in about 7 months (I do plenty at work!). I've been wanting to do a Batman piece for weeks now, and I finally got around to it.

The idea is that this is a Middle Class Batman. It's still Bruce, and his parents were still murdered, but they were never rich, and he still ended up becoming Batman...but on a bit of a budget.
